Just ten days after the UN Security Council discussed Russia’s violation of Poland’s airspace, another emergency meeting was convened today following a new breach — the incursion of a Russian aircraft into Estonian airspace. Dr. Melita Gabrič, Deputy Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of Slovenia, condemned this escalation, underscoring that such behavior is reckless and unacceptable.
European members of the Security Council, including Slovenia, supported the call for today’s meeting, as the Russian Federation violates the territorial integrity of another NATO member state, posing a serious threat to international peace and security. “The incursion of Russian fighter jets into Estonian airspace is a deliberate and dangerous incident. Slovenia stands firmly and without reserve with Estonia, its security, sovereignty, and territorial integrity,” emphasized Deputy Foreign Minister Dr. Gabrič.
In her address to the Council, she also stressed that at a time when tensions are already dangerously high this is not the moment for military provocation. Rather, it is high time for dialogue and diplomacy. “Europe wants peace and a ceasefire in Ukraine,” she added, calling for the immediate launch of serious and meaningful negotiations.
In closing, Deputy Foreign Minister Dr. Gabrič expressed hope that the Security Council will finally take decisive action to end the war in Ukraine. Slovenia stands firmly alongside Estonia, Ukraine, and any other UN Member State that needs protection from unlawful, Charter-violating actions by those who believe that might makes right.
