On the third day of her participation in the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, President Nataša Pirc Musar attended the Fifth Summit of the International Crimea Platform at the invitation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy; the summit took place on the sidelines of the UN session.
At the summit, the Heads of State and Government reaffirmed their commitment to the principles and objectives set out in the United Nations Charter. They emphasised that respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states is the cornerstone of international peace and security. They condemned Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, including its attempted annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol, and the ongoing occupation of parts of Ukrainian territory. The leaders also expressed grave concern about the serious violations of human rights and international humanitarian law occurring in the occupied areas. In their declaration, they called for the immediate, complete and unconditional withdrawal of Russian forces from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognised borders, and for an end to attacks directed against civilians and civilian objects. They expressed their support for the efforts to achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter, and stressed that ending Russia’s aggression is imperative not only for restoring Ukraine’s territorial integrity, but also for safeguarding international law, strengthening global peace and security, and upholding the United Nations’s credibility and founding principles.
During her attendance at the 80th UN General Assembly, the President of the Republic of Slovenia also met with leaders of other states and international institution, exchanging views on pressing global challenges, in particular the humanitarian and climate crises.
On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, President Nataša Pirc Musar met with Secretary-General António Guterres. They discussed reforms that would enable the United Nations to adapt to changes in the international community. President Pirc Musar expressed her strong support for the Secretary-General’s reform efforts and commitment to preserving multilateralism. She emphasised her belief that, in times of global changes, stable international organisations and determined leadership are crucial for building trust in international cooperation. In light of developments in Gaza, both leaders reiterated their well-known positions on the situation in the region and emphasised the crucial role of the UN and its agencies in providing assistance. President Pirc Musar also expressed regret at the Security Council’s inability to take appropriate measures and stressed that political will is essential for achieving a ceasefire.
She also met with the President of the General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, and congratulated her on being elected to this important office. The two leaders exchanged views on the priorities of the General Assembly session and called for a more effective United Nations. President Pirc Musar emphasised Slovenia’s full support for proposals to reform the UN, provided adequate funding, and implement the Pact for the Future. Both leaders agreed that empowering women at all levels, particularly in international diplomacy, was essential to ensuring a fairer and more stable future.
During bilateral talks, President Pirc Musar also exchanged views on current global issues with the Crown Prince of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad, and the President of Panama, José Raúl Mulino. Later in the day, she met with the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Amor Mottley. On the sidelines of the events within the framework of the United Nations General Assembly, the President also spoke with the President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, the President of the Republic of Croatia, Zoran Milanović, the President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the President of the Slovak Republic, Peter Pellegrini, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and other leaders.
To conclude the day, the Slovenian President attended the traditional reception hosted by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, and the First Lady, Melania Trump, on the sidelines of the General Assembly.
