Slovenia was proud to host the 8th Annual Dialogue with current and incoming elected members of the UN Security Council in Ljubljana and Bled on September 1–2. As elected members play a vital role in the Council’s mission to safeguard international peace and security, representatives of all 15 members gathered to exchange best practices and explore ways to strengthen their collaboration in the Council.

The meeting provided an excellent opportunity to discuss how the Security Council can make a more meaningful and concrete contribution to world peace and security. Current and incoming elected members (E10 & I5) addressed the most pressing issues, reflected on common priorities, and considered the opportunities and challenges of a two-year mandate.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Tanja Fajon, who welcomed the participants, emphasized: “The E10 plays a key role. Their principled and decisive action is essential for the Security Council that delivers.”

Representatives from New York and national capitals engaged in discussions on issues of particular relevance to the Security Council’s agenda. They committed to working together, supporting one another, and fostering the “E10 spirit.”

Following the meeting, co-hosts Klemen Ponikvar, Slovenia’s Political Coordinator at the UNSC, and Matej Marn, Head of the UNSC Task Force at the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia, shared their insights into the role of the E10: “We all agree that ensuring peace is our collective responsibility. International humanitarian and human rights law, the protection of civilians, and the prevention of conflicts are collective values that the E10 must stand up for.”
