In response to the latest lightning offensive launched by a terrorist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and others in Syria, the UN Security Council held an urgent meeting today. Significant shifts in frontlines in which large swathes of territory were seized, present new threats to regional and international peace and security. Slovenia called for immediate de-escalation and supported Syrian-led political solution.

Ambassador Samuel Žbogar called on all actors to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law. “The protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure is of utmost importance,” he added and warned of the deterioration of the already precarious situation for refugees and IDPs.
Slovenia further expressed support for the Special Envoy’s efforts towards a genuine and inclusive political process in Syria. It is critical that a Syrian-led political solution, in line with resolution 2254, meets the aspirations of its people. New and comprehensive peace talks are urgent, otherwise we could face a deepening of the crisis.
