The UN Security Council met today to discuss the humanitarian situation in Ukraine, as Russian airstrikes on Ukrainian cities continue to kill civilians and destroy civilian infrastructure. The latest missile attack in densely populated area in Kryvyi Rih last Friday resulted in 20 civilian casualties, half of which were children. Slovenia, supporting the call for a meeting, condemned the attack and warned that it contravenes ongoing peace efforts.

“Even in the time of war, civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected. Moreover, attacks against civilians and its objects are a clear violation of international law, in particular international humanitarian law, and must not go unpunished,” voiced Deputy Permanent Representative Ondina Blokar Drobič, stressing the need for accountability for war crimes committed in Ukraine.
In the meeting, Slovenia also expressed hope that the US-led peace talks will produce results. The Deputy PR once again welcomed the recent announcement of a ceasefire focused on energy infrastructure, as well as negotiations to ensure safe navigation in the Black Sea. Given that Ukraine agreed to the U.S.-proposed 30-day ceasefire, Slovenia called on Russia to follow suit. “What we need is a full ceasefire leading to a just and lasting peace in Ukraine in line with the UN Charter,” underscored the Deputy PR.
