All Syrians must feel safe and protected

Following yesterday’s Israeli airstrikes on Syria, the Security Council convened for an emergency briefing today. The escalation of violence in Suweida province has reportedly resulted in hundreds of deaths and left many more injured and displaced. Ambassador Samuel Žbogar condemned the attacks and called on all parties to adhere fully to the ceasefire. The sectarian discourse must end, and the protection of civilians must be prioritized.

“We reiterate our urgent call for an immediate cessation of all violence across Syria,” underscored the Ambassador, urging the Syrian government to protect all communities in the country. Additionally, it is crucial for neighboring countries and external powers to respect Syria’s independence, sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, and to contribute positively to the success of the transition in Syria. This remains essential to regional stability.

In closing, Ambassador Žbogar emphasized that the Syrian people truly deserve an inclusive political transition and lasting peace. Slovenia stands ready to cooperate in that regard.
