UNSC unanimously adopts a resolution on peaceful settlement of disputes

With all 15 members voting in favor, the Security Council adopted a resolution on conflict prevention and peaceful settlement of disputes. The resolution, sponsored by Pakistan, reaffirms that all States “shall settle their international disputes by peaceful means through dialogue, diplomatic engagement and cooperation in such a manner that international peace and security, and justice, are not endangered.

It also reiterates that States must avoid any threat or use of force that compromises the territorial integrity or political independence of another country – or that runs counter to the principles enshrined in the UN Charter.

Emphasizing the importance of preventing conflicts before they erupt or escalate, the resolution further urged Member States to take all necessary steps to implement effectively Security Council decisions aimed at the peaceful resolution of disputes.

Slovenia stressed the importance of respecting international law, enhancing engagement in conflict prevention, and promoting inclusive processes as essential for lasting peace. It is our firm belief that the pursuit of international peace and security through multilateralism and diplomacy should be a central priority for all States.
