Ukraine: We need a ceasefire resolution now

As the Russian Federation intensifies its brutal attacks on Ukraine, Slovenia – together with its partners – called for a UNSC meeting to receive an update on the latest developments in the country. Sadly, civilian casualties are on the rise, and repeated waves of missile and drone strikes have severely damaged homes, schools, and hospitals across Ukraine.

“Since the beginning of the year, Russia has been escalating its aggression. The attacks culminated in July, when Russia launched its largest aerial attack to date, while June marked the deadliest month for Ukrainian civilians in the past three years,” underscored Ambassador Samuel Žbogar. He added that civilians face daily threats of arbitrary detentions, torture, executions, and sexual violence.

The Ambassador condemned the latest escalation as a clear breach of international humanitarian law. He urged meaningful diplomatic efforts towards a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, and stressed that a ceasefire resolution is urgently needed.
