Slovenia calls for immediate, unconditional and dignified release of all hostages held in Gaza

Today, the UN Security Council held a briefing on the situation in the Middle East. With the remaining hostages from Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, who have been in captivity for almost two years, Slovenia once again reiterated that hostage taking is prohibited and that they must be treated humanely. Starved images – those of hostages and of malnourished children – emerging from Gaza, shock us to our core.

Deliberate starvation is unlawful and morally unacceptable, no matter of the perpetrator. This suffering must end, as it has no place in the 21st century.

Slovenia urged all sides to agree to an immediate ceasefire and recommit to the talks. We reject any plans to expand military operations in Gaza, which would seriously endanger civilians, including hostages, and compound the humanitarian catastrophe. Ambassador Žbogar was clear: “There is no military solution to this suffering. Experience has shown that it brings us no closer to peace, freedom or security for Palestinians or for Israelis. A lasting ceasefire must be secured.
