Slovenia on the UN Security Council: two years of responsible, visible and principled engagement
During its two-year term, Slovenia has proven…
Together with nearly every member of the Security Council, Slovenia called for an emergency meeting of the Security Council following the Israeli cabinet’s announcement to expand its military campaign in Gaza. Prior to the meeting, Ambassador Žbogar delivered a statement to the media on behalf of the five European members of the Council—Denmark, Greece, France, Slovenia, and the United Kingdom.
Slovenia, alongside many others both within and outside the Council, has condemned the planned expansion in Gaza as reprehensible and a deliberate act of destruction. In our view, this escalation will yield nothing but further devastation, posing grave danger to civilians in Gaza and the hostages alike.

Ambassador Žbogar stated: “What will happen to the surviving Palestinians once Israel launches its takeover? Particularly the one million people living in Gaza City, whose lives already hang in the balance—exhausted by relentless attacks and deprived of aid. We will not be able to claim that we didn’t know. We know that civilians are destined to suffer further mass casualties.”
Israel’s decision also stands in direct contradiction to the Advisory Opinion issued by the International Court of Justice in July 2024. The Court was unequivocal in affirming Israel’s obligation to end its unlawful presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. This move reflects a blatant disregard for the two-state solution, a principle strongly supported by nearly the entire international community.
This is not a time for more war. It is a time for diplomacy, restraint, and a renewed commitment to peace.
