Following Israel’s strike on Doha, Qatar, the UN Security Council held an urgent meeting today. Slovenia strongly condemned the attack on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the State of Qatar, and called for a renewed commitment to peace negotiations in good faith by both Israel and Hamas.
The Israeli strike on Doha, targeting Hamas leaders, is not contributing to peace in the Middle East. On behalf of Slovenia, Ambassador Samuel Žbogar expressed grave concern and once again called for full respect of the UN Charter and the rules of war. “Nobody is above the law, no matter how mighty one feels,” he stated.
Slovenia thanked Qatar—a key mediator for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages—for its efforts and urged it to continue. Moreover, with all red lines in the Gaza conflict already crossed, Ambassador Žbogar emphasized that bilateral measures are being taken to pressure Israel to reconsider its policy. “They are our response to persistent violations of international law, to impunity, and to what we now clearly see – a flawed commitment to negotiations,” the Ambassador underlined.
Holding a Council meeting on September 11, the 24th anniversary of terrorist attacks in the United States that killed nearly 3,000 people, Slovenia reaffirmed its resolute stand against terrorism. “We repeat our condemnation of the Hamas brutal attack on 7 October, and we take this opportunity to strongly condemn the latest terror attack on civilians in Jerusalem,” he concluded.
In the midst of the latest developments, the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza persists, and the window to prevent famine from spreading across the Strip is closing. In this regard, Slovenia demanded the obvious: a ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and unimpeded humanitarian access.
