Security Council adopts Gaza resolution

The UN Security Council adopted a US draft resolution on Gaza, focused on the operationalization of the Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict presented by President Trump. As explained by Ambassador Samuel Žbogar, Slovenia voted in favor of the resolution because it represents the best way to ensure that the current ceasefire leads to permanent peace, enjoys strong support from regional countries and Palestine, and reinforces the Security Council’s supervisory role in implementing the Gaza Peace Plan.

“For the past two years on the Security Council, Slovenia has consistently called for an end to the war in Gaza, the return of hostages, and the immediate protection of civilians. Today, we supported a resolution that offers one of the steps toward lasting peace and the vision of the two-state solution,” stressed Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon from the capital.

However, uncertainties and concerns remain. “While this resolution provides a framework, we understand that many details will be agreed upon on the ground and through a consultative process. We underline the need for inclusivity, transparency, and good faith,” emphasized the Ambassador in the explanation of vote. He added that clear terms of reference for the work of the Board of Peace (BoP), along with its composition, should be shared with the Council as soon as they are available. The Council should also receive regular briefings on the BoP’s activities and the International Stabilization Force (ISF), in addition to the mandated written reports.

Furthermore, the Palestinian Authority must assume its full responsibilities in Gaza and the transitional arrangement should support this. Any details regarding the ISF deployment should be consulted with potential troop-contributing countries.

Finally, Ambassador Žbogar reaffirmed Slovenia’s unwavering support for the two-state solution, with Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace and security. He underscored that it is time to build momentum and pursue a tangible political process based on the New York Declaration.
