The UN Security Council, under Slovenia’s Presidency, made its first-ever visit to Syria today, demonstrating the international community’s support and solidarity with the Syrian people during this critical transition period. As emphasized by the President of the Council for the month of December, Ambassador Samuel Žbogar, the international community aims to help build a bridge toward a better future for all Syrians.
Days before the first anniversary of the fall of the Assad regime on December 8 last year, the Security Council visit comes at a significant time for the region. “We came to Syria to build trust,” stressed the Council’s President Žbogar at a press conference in Damascus, reiterating clear support for the “sovereignty, unity, independence and territorial integrity of Syria.”

Before visiting neighboring Lebanon tomorrow and Saturday, the delegation met Syria’s transitional authorities, including President Ahmed al-Sharaa, Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and other cabinet members. The delegation also met with the local UN team in Damascus, Syrian civil society and religious leaders, and communities affected by coastal violence earlier this year on the Syrian coast and southern Sweida province. “All these discussions were greatly enlightening,” said Žbogar.
The discussions in Damascus covered justice, reconciliation, the inclusivity of the country’s ongoing political transition and national dialogue, as well as the humanitarian situation. They also addressed counter-terrorism, economic development, reconstruction, and the need for Syria not to pose a threat to the security of other countries.
In closing, Zbogar delivered a unified message from Council members: “We recognize your country’s aspirations and challenges. The path to a better future of a new Syria will be Syrian-led and Syrian-owned, and the international community stands ready to support you wherever you believe that we can be helpful.” He underscored the UN’s strong presence in Syria and its ability to provide support through its broad range of tools and expertise.
