Today, the UN Security Council convened an open debate on “promoting conflict prevention – empowering all actors including women and youth.” Given women and youth bear the brunt of armed conflicts, Slovenia advocated for inclusion of both on equal basis in all endeavors of conflict prevention.

The rule of law, protection of human rights, reducing poverty and inequality, meaningful participation of women and youth and climate sensitivity are most effective elements of conflict prevention. “Today, no crisis or conflict can be efficiently addressed without the inclusion. One of the surest ways to address the underlying causes of conflict is to fully implement the Women, Peace and Security Agenda and the Youth, Peace and Security Agenda,” highlighted Ambassador Samuel Žbogar while stressing an important role of women and youth in conflict prevention and peacebuilding process.

Furthermore, he echoed that “many conflicts could be avoided by strict compliance with international law.” The Security Council should lead by example and the Council members need to be in forefront of upholding the Charter and international law, including international humanitarian and human rights law.

Preventing conflicts should be the norm, not the exception as what people want most is peace and decent life with a safe future for their children. Slovenia will persistently continue striving for peace and the UN must be the world’s broker for peace.
