Today, the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly adopted a resolution that backs the Palestinian request for full UN membership and determines the State of Palestine as qualified to join. The resolution further calls on the UN Security Council to “reconsider the matter favorably.”

The UN General Assembly voted by 143 in favor, 9 against and 25 abstentions on a resolution that grants Palestine, as the observer state, new rights and privileges.

Slovenia strongly supported the resolution and was among 77 co-sponsors.

As stressed by Ambassador Boštjan Malovrh, Permanent Representative of Slovenia to the UN, “the right to self-determination of peoples is vital for a robust multilateral system. The Slovenian people were able to exercise this right in order to freely establish their sovereign and independent State.” He added that Slovenia empathizes with Palestine’s quest for a sovereign state and believes a two-state solution “is crucial for peace, addressing concerns and ensuring security for both Israel and Palestine.”

The result of the vote is seen as a gesture of support for the Palestinian bid to become a full UN member, following the most recent use of the veto in the UN Security Council.
