Following the killing of the leader of Hamas’ political bureau Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran yesterday, the UN Security Council held an emergency meeting to discuss the latest developments in the Middle East. Slovenia once again called for maximum restraint by all actors in the aftermath of a new spiral of attacks across the region.
Ambassador Žbogar reiterated that we need a ceasefire in Gaza now as well as the full implementation of Security Council resolution 2735 within a strict timeframe. He further implored the Council to think about a time beyond a ceasefire and a sustainable peace for the region, no matter how distant that might currently seem.
Slovenia called on the Security Council to lead and demonstrate a firm stand from the international community. “To help avoid a dangerous escalation of no return,” added the Ambassador.
In addition, Slovenia fully condemned the horrific attack on Majdal Shams on Saturday, 27 July in which a dozen children were killed. This incident should be investigated and the circumstances brought to light. Slovenia reaffirmed that the killing of children is outrageous and inhumane, where ever it occurs, referencing also the shocking attack on a school in Deir Al Balah, Gaza, the same day. This is yet another grim reminder of the terrible toll of the war on civilians.
