Today, the UN Security Council held its first open meeting on the humanitarian and political situation in Syria after a series of historic events in the country that ended the 50-year rule of the Assad family in less than two weeks. Slovenia reiterated its full support to Syrian people, the work of UN Special Envoy Geir Pedersen and the UNDOF mission.
“The transfer of power in Syria carries profound emotional weight for the nation that has endured years of conflict. The idea of change symbolizes the possibility of healing a war-torn country and rebuilding of a future rooted in dignity and justice,” Deputy Permanent Representative Ondina Blokar Drobič underscored.
In this regard, prosperous future depends on a credible and inclusive Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political process with the full, safe and meaningful participation of women. Moreover, unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid across entire Syria must be ensured. Increased humanitarian assistance for the population and Syrian refugees that want to return is of paramount importance.
Deputy Permanent Representative also stressed accountability for perpetrators of serious crimes committed in the territory of Syria. “It is equally important that evidence of atrocities is preserved and documented,” she said.
In conclusion, Slovenia underlined sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and unity of Syria as imperative. It is also crucial that the caretaker authorities respect relevant UNSC resolutions and all Syria’s obligations under international law, including international human rights and international humanitarian law, especially Chemical Weapons Convention.
