In response to the most recent developments in Iran, particularly the US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, the Security Council held its third emergency meeting at Iran’s request. Slovenia denounced the sharp military escalation and called on all leaders to demonstrate leadership for peace. A return to the negotiating table is vital.
The use of force by the US in Iran risks further exacerbating an already extremely dangerous and unstable situation in the Middle East and threatens international peace and security. “Therefore, we join the Secretary-General’s call on the parties to the conflict to disengage from further escalation and retaliation. We call for an immediate ceasefire,” stated Deputy Permanent Representative Ondina Blokar Drobič to Council members, underscoring that diplomacy must prevail.
She expressed profound concern about the tragic consequences of the latest escalation for civilians in the region and emphasized the need to abide by the UN Charter and international law, including international humanitarian law. Additionally, the Deputy PR reaffirmed Slovenia’s firm rejection of nuclear proliferation as concerns whether Iran’s nuclear program is intended exclusively for civilian purposes, still remain. This question needs a tailored diplomatic solution.
