UNSC Arria-formula Meeting: Freshwater Resources and Related Infrastructure under Attack
Today, the UN Security Council held a briefing on the DPRK, focusing on violations of the UNSC sanctions. Slovenia joined the request for a meeting and expressed concern over the trajectory of the country’s nuclear program and its military cooperation with Russia.
Slovenia deeply regrets Russia’s decision to veto the mandate renewal of the 1718 Panel of Experts last year. The Panel’s independent and professional reporting enabled the Security Council and the international community to effectively monitor the implementation of UNSC sanctions on the DPRK. As the mandate of the 1718 Panel of Experts has not been extended, the Council has not received any objective and comprehensive updates about the DPRK’s nuclear and ballistic missile program, which is troubling.
Furthermore, the recent public acknowledgement of military cooperation between the DPRK and Russia, including the presence of DPRK troops in Europe, raises serious concerns about the extent of arms embargo violations. “Public information suggests significant arms transfers from the DPRK to Russia. These actions must be thoroughly investigated, and multiple violations of Security Council resolutions must cease immediately,” emphasized Deputy Permanent Representative Ondina Blokar Drobič.
Blatant disregard towards UN sanctions cannot be normalized. “Slovenia is convinced that sanctions must remain focused on creating conditions conducive to the DPRK abandoning its illegal weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile program,” added the Deputy PR. Denuclearization of the DPRK thus remains imperative. All efforts to achieve it must be anchored in dialogue and diplomacy.
