Slovenia on the UN Security Council: two years of responsible, visible and principled engagement

Following the DPRK’s launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on 31 October, the UN Security Council met today to discuss this worrying development. Slovenia was among the Council members that called for a briefing and condemned a serious threat to regional stability and international peace and security.

Speaking on behalf of Slovenia, Ambassador Samuel Žbogar strongly condemned the DPRK’s latest ICBM launch. “This is yet another blatant violation of multiple Security Council resolutions that are binding and must be implemented,” he emphasized. The DPRK must abandon its illegal nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs in a complete, verifiable and irreversible manner and cease all related activities, he added.
As the North Korean non-proliferation issue has regrettably worsened over the past year, Slovenia expressed serious concern about its development and the growing tensions in the region. The DPRK should return to the negotiating table, as dialogue and diplomacy remain the only path to sustainable peace and denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
