Today, we mark the 80th anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter, one of the most important documents of international law. In 1945, representatives of 50 countries gathered at a conference in San Francisco to sign a document, which lays the foundations for a post-war international community and binds all UN member states to an active participation and a moral obligation to protect the world from the horrors of war.
The values and goals of the UN are of equal importance today as they were 80 years ago. The anniversary is a reminder of how crucial it is to uphold the multilateral system, solidarity, dialogue and joint action for a better future for all people.
Slovenia is a firm supporter of an effective multilateral system. Ever since joining the UN, it has played an active role in the organization and has highlighted the significance of its role in the world. At the 80th anniversary of the signing, we are sending out a reminder that peace and cooperation are not self-evident, but rather a result of our common will and responsibility.
“The UN Charter, this tiny booklet, has been ratified by 193 countries. Unfortunately, these 80 years have shown that many of these countries have completely forgotten about the contents of the Charter. That is why, in the name of peace, we are calling for the respect of this fundamental international treaty. There is still time to change the situation in the world and restore hope in the objectives which were a driving force behind the creation of the UN Charter. For the security and prosperity of humanity,” Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Tanja Fajon pointed out on the occasion of the anniversary.
At the UNGA informal meeting to commemorate the eightieth anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter, Ambassador Samuel Žbogar stated that peace is not a given. This is why the UN Charter remains as relevant as ever.
Today, as global challenges mount, the world is in dire need of leadership for peace. With this in mind, the Ambassador emphasized: “This is the time to build a new cross-regional coalition of the willing to protect the system of collective security built around the UN, its Charter, and international law.”
