Following Israeli attacks on Iran and Iran’s response on 13 June, the UN Security Council held an emergency session to address the latest developments in the region. Slovenia called for de-escalation and maximum restraint by all parties as well as the continuation of US-Iran nuclear talks in Muscat.
As stated by Deputy Permanent Representative Ondina Blokar Drobič, Slovenia is deeply concerned with the situation that threatens to further destabilize an already fragile and volatile Middle East region. “We condemn any military escalation in the region,” she added, emphasizing the need to find a political solution. A return to diplomacy and stability must prevail.
With regard to Iran’s nuclear program, Slovenia repeated its concerns about the size, and the uncertain nature of the program. The IAEA still hasn’t confirmed the exclusively peaceful use of Iran’s nuclear technology, which is why Iran must fully cooperate with the agency and meet its nuclear objectives. Furthermore, talks between Iran and the US on the future of Iran’s nuclear program are crucial not only for the region but for the entire international community. Such diplomatic efforts must continue.
It is high time to take urgent action and prevent a descent into deeper conflict. The region, and indeed the world, cannot afford it.
