As strikes between Israel and Iran continue and the situation rapidly deteriorates, the Security Council convened for a second emergency session. Slovenia condemned the military escalation and attacks from both sides, and the unnecessary loss of civilian lives. It is time for immediate de-escalation leading to a full and unconditional ceasefire.
“We are deeply concerned that the conflict will push the region toward a point of no return,” stated Deputy Permanent Representative (PR) Ondina Blokar Drobič, echoing the Secretary-General’s appeal to avoid any further internationalization of the conflict. She called on Israel and Iran to respect the UN Charter and international humanitarian law.
Slovenia’s foremost priority remains non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, along with safe and secure operation of civilian nuclear facilities.
Furthermore, the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, commonly known as the “Iran Nuclear Deal”, will need a replacement as it is due to expire in October 2025. Slovenia welcomed diplomatic efforts in that regard, as the foreign ministers of Germany, France, Great Britain and Iran held nuclear talks in Geneva earlier today. These talks represent a much-needed stabilizing factor.
In closing, the Deputy PR called on both sides to commit to peace and to spare their own civilians – and the Middle East region – from further bloodshed and destruction.
