Middle East: All actors should prioritize immediate de-escalation and diplomacy

Following the most recent escalation of violence in the Middle East, the Security Council held an urgent meeting to discuss the developments in the region. UN Secretary-General António Guterres briefed the Council and voiced that “this deadly cycle of violence must stop.” Slovenia condemned regional escalation, and called on all actors to show restraint and respect international law, particularly international humanitarian and human rights law.

As stressed by Deputy Permanent Representative Ondina Blokar Drobič in her remarks, the actions and reactions of actors involved are dragging the Middle East further away from peace and closer to an all-out war. “No single party can absolve itself of blame for the chaos that is unfolding,” she added.

Slovenia utterly condemned all recent attacks in the region, including Iran’s attack against Israel, Israeli attacks in Lebanon and the escalation between Hezbollah and Israel. It called on Israel to revoke their ground operation in Southern Lebanon and stop their continuous military operation in Gaza. Slovenia also condemned yesterday’s terror attack in Israel’s Jaffa.

Given that each strike has fueled the next, the region needs full and immediate de-escalation. Slovenia underlined a dire need to recommit and fully implement resolution 1701 and protect civilians.

Slovenia also expressed full support to the United Nations and Secretary-General Guterres.

In closing, the Deputy Permanent Representative called on the Security Council to unite in calling out for an all-out ceasefire.
