Russia’s latest attack brings us no closer to peace

Yesterday, Russia launched its second-biggest aerial attack since the start of the war in Ukraine, killing at least 23 people, including children, and injuring over 60 others. In view of yet another deadly strike on Kyiv with a barrage of missiles and drones, the Security Council held an urgent meeting, also supported by Slovenia.

Russia’s strike on Kyiv not only destroyed residential buildings, it also hit the premises belonging to the EU Mission and the British Council. The assault has been widely condemned by Council members. “Aerial attacks on densely populated urban areas with explosive weaponry have no justification,” Deputy Permanent Representative Ondina Blokar Drobič stated.

Furthermore, the latest intensification of attacks on Ukraine’s civilian population has not brought Russia and Ukraine any closer to peace. “Hopes for peace are being contradicted by actions on the ground,” Ambassador Blokar Drobič emphasized. The escalation is a blatant violation of international humanitarian law and must not go unpunished, she added.

In the meeting, Slovenia renewed its urgent call for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire leading to a just and lasting peace in line with the UN Charter. Slovenia stands with the people of Ukraine for peace, dignity, and freedom. The bloodshed must end.
