Slovenia welcomes the announcement of a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal

Slovenia welcomes the ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel, a long-overdue step that allows for the return of hostages and offers a glimpse of hope to the people of Gaza. It will enable the delivery of much needed humanitarian aid.

“Relief. Peace. Hope. I warmly welcome the ceasefire and hostage deal between Israel and Hamas. Finally the end of immense suffering and unimaginable death toll. May it mark the new beginning for the Palestinian and Israeli people living side-by-side in peace and security and pave the way for a two-state solution,” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Tanja Fajon emphasized.

“I think the agreement is the beginning of the end of the suffering for Palestinians and hostages. However, there is neither time nor is it appropriate to rejoice in it. There is a huge project ahead of us. How to take care of the two million wounded, sick, disabled, cold, starving, traumatized Palestinians. Then there are issues of ensuring public order and peace in Gaza, managing Gaza, and the issues of organizing education, healthcare and the entire reconstruction of the completely destroyed Gaza,” added Ambassador Samuel Žbogar.

However, now is not the time to rest on our laurels. A permanent ceasefire must be secured. We must intensify our efforts towards lasting peace and a two-state solution. We commend the mediators and everyone else who contributed to this important breakthrough.
