The Security Council discussed the latest developments in Syria today, where the political situation, following the fall of the Assad regime two months ago, is still unfolding. Syria is now at a historic moment in fulfilling the aspirations of its people to live in peace, freedom and prosperity. Slovenia noted that the inclusive political transition is essential in both a timely and credible manner. In this regard, Slovenia called for the implementation of UNSC resolution 2254 and Syria’s continued dialogue with neighbors, regional actors, the international community and the UN.
Ambassador Samuel Žbogar underscored the importance of an inclusive political process – women and men, regardless of their ethnic or religious affiliations must be included in shaping Syria’s future. “A new, united Syria must use the voice of both civil society and women,” he added.
It is critical to address humanitarian crisis in Syria “affecting more than 70 percent of the population,” the UN Assistant Secretary-General Msuya pointed out. Slovenia welcomed the delivery of humanitarian assistance at scale and joined the calls for additional international support.
Further, there will be no sustainable peace in Syria without security. Closing its chemical weapons file once and for all and eliminating terrorism and violent extremism also remain pivotal for regional stability. Slovenia urged all parties to refrain from any escalation and reiterated the importance of respect for the sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity of Syria.
In closing, Ambassador Žbogar stressed the need of ensuring accountability and justice for victims as an essential step towards a stable and peaceful Syria.
