Today, Security Council members addressed the deteriorating security situation and the expanding foothold of armed groups in Haiti that continue to destabilize the state. Slovenia called for the use of all available UNSC tools to eliminate the threats posed by gang groups and expressed profound concern over the dire humanitarian situation.
As underlined by Ambassador Samuel Žbogar in the meeting, Slovenia stands ready to support the Secretary-General’s proposal to establish a UN Support Office within the Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission. “We believe that such a realistic and practical arrangement would enable the MSS to fully carry out its mandate, and, ultimately, deliver for the Haitian people,” stated the Ambassador, adding that security and stability must be re-established.

Furthermore, as the humanitarian and human rights situation in Haiti – especially for women and children – continues to worsen, Slovenia called for immediate, safe, and unimpeded humanitarian access. The gang’s use of sexual and gender-based violence as a tool to instill fear and exert control is unacceptable.
“We need a solution-oriented approach to alleviate the suffering of the Haitian people and support them on their path towards peace, security, stability, and economic recovery,” concluded the Ambassador, expressing support for the BINUH Mission mandate renewal. Its contribution to supporting the much needed political progress in Haiti remains essential.
