Today the UN Security Council convened for an open debate on multilateralism. As during Slovenia’s Presidency of the Council in September last year, when we organized an open debate on Leadership for Peace, UN Members once again united to demonstrate the continuing need for and their belief in the world organization.

Slovenia believes the way forward to revive the UN and its fundamental promise “to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war” is through:

• a genuine commitment to a world free of fear and free of want as well as through full respect of human rights and dignity;
• addressing new security concerns, such as climate change, environmental threats, cyberattacks and terrorism;
• pride in the UN’s past achievements, especially the UN’s legal framework which enables the power of rules to replace the rule of power.
