Ukraine and Europe want peace — not war

To receive an update on the latest political and humanitarian developments in Ukraine, Slovenia, together with other European members of the Council, called for a briefing. Ambassador Samuel Žbogar condemned a surge in large-scale Russian airstrikes over the weekend and called for an unconditional ceasefire.

With hopes for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, anchored in the UN Charter, Slovenia continues to support the ongoing diplomatic efforts. “We welcome all contacts between Ukraine and Russia, like the Istanbul peace talks in mid-May, and the largest prisoner-of-war exchange,” the Ambassador stated. He stressed the need for a full, immediate and unconditional ceasefire that would pave the way to negotiations on enduring peace in Ukraine.

Regrettably, instead of steps towards peace, Ukraine and its population are enduring a relentless barrage of aerial attacks. Moreover, the attack on 26 May was the largest drone attack on Ukraine since the start of the war. “Slovenia condemns these attacks in the strongest possible terms and reiterates that attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure are clearly prohibited under international humanitarian law,” concluded Ambassador Žbogar, calling on Russia to stop hesitating and pursue peace.
