Today, the UN Security Council convened for a briefing on Ukraine to receive an update on the latest developments and reflect on the outlook for a just and lasting peace. The meeting was requested by Slovenia and the US. Slovenia reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ukraine and all meaningful efforts towards peace – in the Council and elsewhere.
The war in Ukraine rages on with no end in sight. On the contrary, the war has been constantly gaining in complexity, including with DPRK troops now allegedly operating alongside Russian units, the disastrous toll on civilian lives, the deliberate targeting of Ukrainian energy infrastructure and the ever present risk of a nuclear accident.
“However, let me be clear. All wars come to an end and every peace begins by upholding the UN Charter. Without respect for its fundamental principles of sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, there can be no lasting peace. Not in Ukraine, nor elsewhere,” Ambassador Samuel Žbogar underlined. He also reiterated that for a just peace, holding Russia to account remains paramount.
