UN overwhelmingly backs urgent ceasefire in Gaza

Today, the 193-member UN General Assembly expressed its overwhelming support to the latest Gaza resolution. The text, introduced by Spain, Slovenia, and a group of other countries, demands an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and unrestricted aid access. The support of 149 countries voting in favor clearly demonstrates the international community’s commitment to peace and security in the Middle East. Furthermore, General Assembly resolutions hold significant political and moral influence, and reflect the views of its membership.

A week after a similar effort in the UN Security Council, the General Assembly took action – with the overwhelming majority supporting the draft resolution on Gaza. Additionally, the resolution strongly condemns the use of starvation as a weapon of warfare, and demands a full lifting of the Israeli blockade on humanitarian aid.

Slovenia delivered a statement on behalf of the 10 elected members (E10) of the UN Security Council. The group reiterated its grave concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza, including the risk of famine, having drafted a similar UNSC proposal. Regrettably, the text was not adopted due to a veto by a permanent member of the Council – the US.

Delivering the statement, Deputy Permanent Representative Ondina Blokar Drobič repeated the E10’s position: “We believe the war in Gaza must come to an immediate halt, all hostages must be immediately and unconditionally released, and civilians in Gaza must not starve and must have full and unimpeded access to aid.”

It is crucial that all parties to the conflict abide by their obligations under international humanitarian law.
