War in Ukraine: Russia should engage in peace talks in good faith

Slovenia, together with Denmark, France, Greece and the UK, called for a Security Council briefing on Ukraine as horrific attacks on residential buildings and critical civilian infrastructure continue and intensify. In its aerial strike on Kyiv last Tuesday, 17 June, Russia fired a huge barrage of hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles, killing and wounding more than 100 people. Slovenia condemned the attacks in the strongest possible terms and repeated its plea for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.

The deadliest attack on the Ukrainian capital in almost a year is yet another reminder that Russia has no will to compromise. On the contrary – Russia has intensified its air strikes against Ukrainian cities in recent weeks. According to the UN, “nearly 50 per cent more civilians have been killed and injured in Ukraine in the first five months of 2025 than during the same period in 2024.”

“Russian attacks are an obvious violation of international humanitarian law,” underlined Deputy Permanent Representative Ondina Blokar Drobič, calling on Russia to focus on a full ceasefire and engage in peace talks in good faith.

In May and June, the parties held two rounds of direct peace talks, the first since March 2022. But due to Moscow’s actions, no significant progress on ending the war has been made. Slovenia welcomes and supports all diplomatic efforts towards a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.

The time for peace is now.
