Security Council must show political will to help end the war in Gaza

Today, the UN Security Council held a briefing on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question, which focused on the implementation of resolution 2720. Adopted in December 2023, the resolution mandates a mechanism and a coordinator for scaling up humanitarian aid and the reconstruction of Gaza.

Slovenia reiterated that the delivery of humanitarian aid at scale has not been achieved and that the way forward in Gaza should be a cascading approach: ensuring a ceasefire that holds, restoring essential services, launching a time-bound political process and implementing the two-state solution, and kick-starting reconstruction.

Sigrid Kaag, Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza briefed the Council alongside UNOPS Executive Director Moreira da Silva. “The recovery and reconstruction of Gaza should not wait. As much as political conditions will dictate the pace and nature of this process, children need to learn, healthcare needs to be provided, and housing needs to start,” Ms. Kaag stressed.

In his statement, Ambassador Samuel Žbogar noted that nine months after the adoption of the UNSCR 2720, the main purpose of the resolution – to accelerate the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza – remains unfulfilled.

“In Gaza, challenges continue to mount: from attacks on deconflicted shelters and convoys, evacuation orders, food insecurity, diseases, to breakdown of law and order and the destruction of basic infrastructure. We unequivocally condemn the recent attack on UNRWA school-turned-shelter,” underlined the Ambassador, calling for unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid and the opening and functioning of all border crossings.

Furthermore, Slovenia reiterated the need to end impunity for violations of international humanitarian law. It is unacceptable that civilians are killed, maimed, bombed, starved and displaced in full view of the international community. “When there is political will, civilians can be protected and taken care of,” underscored the Slovenian Ambassador.
