Slovenia’s remarks at the flag raising ceremony

Statement by Representative of Slovenia to the UN Security Council, Ambassador Samuel Žbogar, at the flag installation ceremony for newly elected UN Security Council members for the term 2024-2025

We are entering the Council today with a great sense of responsibility, and determination.

The work of Slovenia in the Council will be guided by the UN Charter, international law, and our foreign policy of peace. We pledge to act in good will and transparently.

We trust in multilateral system with the UN at its core as the only way to find solutions to the most serious crisis. As a member and the president of the Council in the month of September, we will support the goals this organization sets for its future.

While we understand the Security Council reflects the current state of world affairs, we at the same time believe that the Council when respecting and reflecting on members’ positions can genuinely work towards international peace and security.

Slovenia will be a responsible, credible and responsive member. Our aim is to be a unifying force. We remain committed to building trust, the pledge we made during our campaign.

Ongoing conflicts in Gaza, Sudan and Ukraine are just some of the most visible examples of failures of prevention and conflict resolution.

Therefore, apart from looking to end these conflicts, would like to see great(er) emphasis on prevention, as well as on protection of civilians once conflicts emerge. We will be especially attentive to the situations of women and girls. The new sources of tensions and conflicts such as climate and water security would also be in our focus.

We want to thank all members of the Council, in particular those who left, Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana and the UAE for their outstanding contributions. We thank them for their valuable advice and genuine support.

We are particularly looking forward to working closely with other incoming members, the class of 2024/25, and with all elected and permanent members alike. We are grateful for the support and advice of the Secretariat and civil society.

In the puzzle that unites us all in search for peace, we recognize the specific role of the UN Secretariat, agencies, peace keepers and humanitarian workers. We are looking forward to a fruitful collaboration with the UN Secretary General, especially when it comes to many challenging situations on the Council’s agenda.

Allow me to conclude in Slovenian:

V Varnostni svet vstopamo v trenutku krize njegove kredibilnosti.

Thank you.
