Joint Statement of the Core Group of the “Shared Commitments” on UNRWA
23 January 2026 – Joint Statement in support of UNRWA
Statement by Permanent Representative of Slovenia to the United Nations Samuel Žbogar at UNGA 83rd plenary meeting, agenda item 36: The situation in Afghanistan
Mr. President,
Slovenia aligns itself with the statement delivered by the European Union and would like to add a few points in our national capacity.
We thank Germany for their dedicated efforts in facilitating the process leading to this text of the resolution before us.
Slovenia fully aligns with the concerns shared today. By supporting this resolution, we send a clear and vital message to the people of Afghanistan:
You are not forgotten.
Mr. President,
We are deeply concerned over deteriorating humanitarian situation, further exacerbated by environmental degradation, climate shocks and natural disasters. These persistent pressures on the humanitarian crisis have profound repercussions for overall stability of Afghanistan.
Slovenia has supported the Afghan people through contributions to the key humanitarian organizations on the ground. And we will continue doing so also in the future.
Mr. President,
We remain very concerned about the state of human rights, particularly for women and girls, who continue to be completely erased from public life. Such human rights violations inevitably weaken Afghanistan’s long-term prosperity, stability and security.
We reiterate our calls for the Taliban to reverse these unacceptable discriminatory policies and practices targeting women and girls.
Mr. President,
We are convinced that the adoption of this resolution will provide an updated political, humanitarian and developmental framework for future dialogue with and on Afghanistan, towards addressing the needs of Afghan people and their brighter future.
Let me end this statement by expressing Slovenia’s strong support to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan.
Thank you.
