Sudan: almost 25 million people in need of humanitarian assistance

Today, the UN Security Council convened to address the deteriorating crisis in Sudan. Secretary-General Guterres briefed the Council, expressing profound concern that the people of Sudan are living through a nightmare of relentless violence. Slovenia reiterated that there is no military solution to this conflict. A cessation of hostilities, the protection of civilians, and safe and unhindered humanitarian access remain a priority.

Eighteen months since the fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces erupted, the reports from Sudan still tell of continued and unimaginable suffering – the people of Sudan are facing brutal violence, mass killings, displacement, widespread sexual assaults and gender based violence, hunger, disease, and destruction of essential and critical civilian infrastructure. As stressed by the Secretary-General, “the suffering is growing by the day, with almost 25 million people now requiring assistance.”

Slovenia emphasized that continued external support, especially through the provisions of arms, worsens the suffering and prolongs the devastation. “The recently renewed UN arms embargo, adopted unanimously by this Council, must be respected, strictly monitored and enforced,” underlined Ambassador Samuel Žbogar.

He further called for a cessation of all hostilities by all parties and added that conflict-related sexual violence must end immediately. The Ambassador reminded the warring parties of their obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law, including that the starvation as a method of warfare is prohibited by international law. Perpetrators must be held accountable.

To end the unspeakable atrocities, coordinated and decisive action is needed. Slovenia stands ready to support united action for peace in Sudan.
